Obituary
April 24, 1955 – November 21, 2022.
Flight plan filed…… wheels up….departure at 14:00 hundred hours, he circled the runway, wagged his wings to those of us below and flew west…..
The final flight for a lifelong pilot, born and raised in Saskatchewan…where open spaces and open skies called to him to fly. When you see a Beaver aircraft or vapour trail across the sky…think of him and smile…. he’ll be looking down…
Captain Barry Allan Brayford was born in Kelvington, Saskatchewan on April 24, 1955. Three days later his family travelled to Lake Waskisu, where he would spend the first summer of his 67 summers “at the lake”
Son of Captain Daryl C. Brayford (deceased 2012) and Laura M. Holland Brayford (nee Holland) deceased (2017)
Great grandson of Minnie & Samuel Brayford (deceased). Grandson of Sam & Emma Brayford (deceased) and Lillian & Ernie Holland (deceased)
Barry’s early years as a pilot involved lots of “bush flying”, floatplane skeds and charters as well as fire patrols and air ambulance flights in all types weather and flying conditions….. later moving to short haul commercial passenger airlines. He loved flying, and the adventure of it. During his career, he flew for Norcan Air, LaRonge Air, Peace Air, Time Air, Canadian Airlines, Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz…. Captain Barry Brayford retired in April 2020.
In 1982, (flying For Peace Air at the time) a mutual friend, Carman Anne Duncan Schulz introduced Barry to Lorraine Osinchuk Plummer…he was smitten and thus began a lifetime of adventures, love, travel and the joy of family and friends.…. this year they celebrate 40 years together as soulmates, partners and best friends.
Barry is loved and admired by his instant family: Winita(Randy) Zaichkowsky, Michael(Kelly) Plummer, Wanda (Tobin) Hulme, Michelle (Pete) Gervais and grandchildren: Ashley, Greg (Josee), Corrie, Payton (Rylie), Carter, Taylor (Nicole) and many of their friends.
Lifetimes of memories created together in Peace River, Slave Lake, Victoria, Richmond, the Okanagan, Hawaii, and Mexico. Awesome summer fun times at Sun Oka and Skaha beaches, Lake Waskisu, the cabin, and Prince Albert National Park
Barry has one brother Kirk who resides in Saskatchewan. He has two awesome aunties who he adores Shirley Holland-Nickels and Louise Holland-Biggs.
Numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews of the Holland, Brayford, Plummer, Kunstleben and Osinchuk extended families
Boats and Brayfords go together for more than four generations…Barry loves being on the water and boating and is a fisherman extraordinare. In keeping with tradition of his father and Grandfather is a master fish filleter.
He thrived on exploring outdoors, birding, camping, kayaking, RVing in Mexico. He was a natural teacher and loved to help people learn to love, boating, fishing, skiing, swimming, waterskiing, kayaking, dancing, camping and fire building.
Barry’s an accomplished cook …family favorites …campfire fried fish, ribs, apple pies and cherry cheesecake
He relished our backyard sanctuary … quail, hummingbirds, sparrows, wrens, finches and jays are daily visitors.
Barry lived in Kelvington, Saskatoon, Fort Simpson, Uranium City, Fort Liard, Lac LaRonge, Lynn Lake, Peace River, Slave Lake, Victoria, Richmond and retired to the sunny Okanagan and beautiful Summerland BC. Now he flies free slipping the bonds of Earth to explore the Heavenly realms. …He passed his final check ride…. Higher and Faster.
