Donald Gilbert Cousens

July 3, 1938 - December 28, 2022

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) Gilbert Cousens on December 28, 2022 at the age of 84. Don was predeceased by his wife Florence (ne Riske) and his parents Ann (ne Penman) and William Cousens.

Donald was born on July 3, 1938, in Bellevue, Alberta and moved with his family to Michel, BC, in 1946 where he held many fond memories of growing up in the small coal mining town.  Following his graduation from Sparwood High School in 1956, Don moved to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia. He later joined his older brother, Bill, at Victoria College in their second year. Then Don returned to UBC where he completed his degree in art. It was at Victoria College that he met his future wife, Florence.

After obtaining his degree from UBC, Don enjoyed a rewarding career as a high school art teacher at schools in greater Vancouver, Merritt, and Quesnel. When he retired from teaching, Don turned a personal interest in finance into a second career as a financial advisor. He enjoyed meeting and counselling his clients on their investment strategies.

Upon retirement, Don and Florence moved to Penticton, made many friendships, and continued their passion for travel by touring the world by truck, motor home, airplane, and cruise ship. Throughout his life, Don had a passion for photography and together with Florence enjoyed competitive bridge into their retirement years.

Don is survived by his older brother William (Bill) Cousens (Barbara) of Calgary, and nieces Heather Appel, Laurel Cousens, and Colleen Fortuna, as well as by his sister-in law, Mildred, and many nieces and nephews.

Don’s request, a service will not be held.

Rest easy Uncle Don! I will miss your sense of humour, our many chats, the banter as we drove around, and that you always laughed when I teased you. I know that Amber, your cat, was a loyal companion after Aunt Florence passed so as promised I will take good care of her.

From: Diane de Vries
Relation: a life long friend

I just found out today when I tried to call Don. I t had been awhile since I last talked to him. I had made a recipe of Florence’s today and thought of him, I have fond memories of all the good times we had together. Bowling, dinners together, and travelling across Canada together in a rented truck with their camper. They were both very special to us
