Esperanza Marteddu
January 15, 1934 - December 11, 2023
Obituary
Esperanza Marteddu (nee Carranza Carrere) of Penticton, beloved wife of Victor, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2023 at the age of 89 years.
Born in Pina de Ebro, Zaragoza, Spain, on January 15, 1934. As a small child during the Spanish Civil War, she was an evacuee for a time, living with a wonderful family in France before returning to her beloved village. Although times were hard, she was surrounded by love and family and told many stories of a joyful childhood. She would return to France to live in Paris as an adult, where she studied French and art. In 1964 she arrived in Vancouver where she would meet her husband Victor, ultimately settling in Gibsons, BC until moving to Penticton in 2016 to be near her daughter and son-in-law.
Esperanza lived much of her life in service. She lovingly gave her heart and energy to her family, and extended family, and was always volunteering for various arts events, from the earliest years of the Gibsons Art Gallery, sewing costumes for her daughter’s dance recitals, and many years at the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts. She was a woman who radiated kindness, and playful, smiling warmth.
Besides her loving husband Victor, Esperanza is survived by her one daughter Brigitte (Stephans Liapis), sister Felisa Englund (Seddon), niece Viky and nephews Eric and Mark.
Esperanza was predeceased by her parents Julian Carranza Abenia and Alfonsa Carrere Celma, and sister Maripaz (in infancy).
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Kettle Valley Memorial, 1873 Main Street in Penticton, BC.
Flowers are gratefully declined. As Esperanza was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2017, those who wish to make donations can do so at Parkinson Canada (Parkinson.ca)
