Fredrick William Horning

Obituary
It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the death of our loving father, Fredrick William Horning. On the afternoon of February 3rd, 2024, surrounded by family, Fred passed away after a long battle with COPD. He was 78 years old.
Fred was born on February 11th, 1945, in Burns Lake, BC. His father’s name was Earl Raymond Horning and his mother’s name was Anna Isabelle Gair. Fred was predeceased by his siblings Doug, Howard, Isla, Keith, Russell, and David. His other brothers Raymond and Alfred are still living, along with their foster sister Debbie.
Fred was the father of 8 children: August Horning, Barbara Hay, Stanley Horning, Bonnie Horning, Angelina Sexton, Natasha Horning, Monica Lopes, and Tara-Lee Horning. He was a grandfather to 11 children: Mellissa, Stanley, & Sarah; Michael & Morgan; Brianne & Layne; Abby & Jorja; Cooper; and Samuel. He was also a great-grandfather to several.
Early in life, growing up on the family farm in Rose Lake, BC, our father learned the importance of hard work and he instilled that same work ethic in us. He spent many years as a logger and truck driver working all over Western Canada. While family always came first, truck driving was his passion and those who knew him knew he liked to drive fast, which is how his nickname “Bullet” came about.
After many years in Houston, BC, he moved to Mackenzie, BC, where he raised his four daughters. He spent his last year in Keremeos, BC, near his two youngest daughters, where he made several new friends and reconnected with some old ones.
Fred worked hard but also liked to play hard. He was a kind and gentle family man who enjoyed camping, fishing, and the outdoors. With a heart of gold, hands tough as nails, a smile as sweet as pie, he had a personality like no other. Fred made friends easily and was well respected. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
“Fast Freddy” left us too soon, but he is now at peace, breathing easy, waiting for us to catch up to him.
There will be an open-invite Celebration of Life held in Mackenzie, BC, at 1:00pm, on March 9th. Location will be the Royal Canadian Legion, at 357 Skeena Drive.

Hi, I work at Orchard Haven right beside Kyalami and I had the pleasure to know your dad briefly. He was a good friend to one of our folks who wasn’t with us long but your dad said he had worked for him up North. I think trucking.
Your dad started to visit his friend and always had time to talk to JoJo our Cockatiel. Some days he just came in to talk to him.
He was very kind, always had time for a quick chat and a person would walk away feeling happy for the moment spent with him.
He may not have realized it but he made a difference in the lives of the residents who went outside for a smoke and the staff he spoke to. We were all a little frazzled after Covid and his stories and way he spoke about his past was so nice to hear.
Just last week asking about him and hoped he was ok. But like you said he’s breathing easy now and will welcome you all with open arms.
It was a privilege to have spent a short time with him. Take care

So sorry to hear of Fred’s passing ❤️condolences to all of the family. He hauled logs in Houston for many years and was a favourite personality at the scale house. His quick wit and sharp sense of humour was always welcome entertainment. I will always remember his big smile while wearing his silver aluminum hard hat.
