Jose Manuel Gonclaves

June 25, 1946 - June 8, 2023

Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Jose Manuel Rodrigues Goncalves, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, who departed this life on June 8, 2023, at Penticton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Jose was born on June 25, 1946, in the small town of Espargal, Loule, Portugal. His life story began amid the vibrant Portuguese culture, steeped in tradition that he carried with him throughout his life. He met his soulmate, Idalina, and their love flourished. Jose said it was love at first sight and solidified their commitment to each other in marriage on April 6, 1969. They welcomed their first son, Luis, before setting out on an adventurous journey, leaving their homeland of Portugal for the promise of new opportunities in Penticton, Canada, in 1971. It was here in Canada that they welcomed their second son, Jerry, completing their family. Jose leaves behind his beloved wife, Idalina, his sons Luis (Mary) and Jerry (Vicky), and his adored grandchildren, Catarina, Claudia, Adam, and Charlotte. Each of them carries a piece of Jose’s spirit, reflecting his love, strength, and integrity in their own lives. Known for his affable nature, and generosity, Jose’s memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His vibrant stories of his Portuguese roots and his unmatched skill at fixing anything broken are amongst the many fond memories that will continue to bring smiles in remembrance.

In keeping with his wishes, Jose’s life will be celebrated on June 16, 2023, at St. Anne’s Parish in Penticton, British Columbia. They invite those who knew and loved Jose to remember him in their own special way. A toast with a glass of his favoured Portuguese wine or the enjoyment of a traditional pastel de nata would be a fitting tribute to his memory. While we mourn his physical departure, Jose’s spirit remains ever-present. His life’s journey, characterized by love, bravery, and resilience, will continue inspiring those privileged to know him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in each heart he touched.

Rest in peace, dear Jose. Your light will forever illuminate our memories.
