I found a picture of you

One that I had not seen in a while

I held it gently in my hands

Lost for a moment in your smile

I found a card from you

Written in your own special way

To let me be lost for a moment

To remember life not just death

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Mother, Grand-Mother and Great-Grand Mother. Suddenly on June 2, 2021 in Penticton British Columbia,      Lorna was called to be with God. She was 88 years young. 

Left behind holding precious memories are her son, Grant Hackman, Winnipeg Manitoba; Daughter Deborah and Dave Pearson, Penticton B.C.; Grand-Daughter Haley and partner Logan Rennie and Great-Grand-Daughter Rene Mozzie Rennie, all of Penticton B.C.

Lorna has also left behind her loving extended family with many members including Rheanne Gray, Van, Ayla & Ralph Hamilton, in Russell Manitoba. Also left to preserve her memory was a special friend, Rev. David Howell also of Russell Manitoba.

Lorna also leaves behind her sister Maxine Radford, Brandon Manitoba along with many nieces and nephews; Viola (Verne) Chuchmuch, Kelly Chuchmuch (Clint) Gerry Radford, Doug (Cindy) Radford, Laurie (Miriam) Radford, Donna Moore, Marlene (Mike) Petik, Shirley(Steve) Hackman, Carrie Hackman, Colleen & Jim Stallard , Connie & & David Neuber Garry & Judy Hackman Charlene & Rob Linda (Tim) Coulter, Evelyn (Ian) McKewen, Trent (Louise ) Hackman and all her many close friends in the Russell Manitoba area.

Lorna was pre-deceased by her Mother and Father, Charles and Katherine Tennant; husband Harvey Hackman, Sister Norma Moore, and her Grandson Kyle Sayese in 2020. Sister-In-Laws, Eleanor Dunn, Opal Hackman, Pearl Hackman Edith Hackman, Ally Hackman; Brother -In-Laws John Ziprick, Bruce Moore, Ron Radford, Ray Hackman, Lloyd Hackman, Bill Hackman, Nelson Hackman, Wilf Dunn, Norman & Dorothy Hackman & Francis 

Lorna was born at the family farm near Binscarth Manitoba, the youngest of three daughters. She attended Woodstock School where she was very active in all types of sports, especially baseball. Lorna also worked hard on the farm alongside her sisters and her mother and father. After graduating grade 12,with Honors Lorna attended Success Career College in Winnipeg where she attained a degree in Stenography.  While on a summer break and helping out on the family farm, Lorna met Harvey. While they were dating, Lorna was offered a job at the Law firm of Smellie and Smellie in Russell Manitoba.  Many fun times and adventures were had with life time friends Shorty (Clifford) Gray and his sweetheart, Joyce Anderson. No dance occurred in the area that this foursome missed!

On December 12, 1953 Lorna and Harvey were married and farmed, lived and loved together until Harvey’s passing in 2000. In April 1960, they were blessed with their daughter Deborah Lynne, followed by son Darrell Grant in 1966.

Throughout the years on the farm, Lorna and Harvey raised feeder cattle along with grain farming until Harvey’s death in 2000.  Throughout the years, Lorna worked part time in the Saan Store in Russell along with many volunteer activities and committees.  Lorna was known for having the perfect lawn, flowers and house yard and could be found mowing grass long after dark.

In 2000, Lorna sold the farm and retired to a new beginning in Russell. As mentioned, she volunteered throughout the 21 years in Russell at the Thrift shop along with the Senior Centre. Lorna was a long-time member of the United Church Women (UCW), Women’s Institute (WI), Silverton United Church Choir along with numerous other organizations. She loved been involved in horticulture throughout the years.

Lorna’s passion in life was music and dancing. She travelled near and far to attend dances where rain sleet or snow did not slow her down! Once up and dancing, she generally did not sit down all night. Lorna sang and danced at home every day as well, right up to her death.

Lorna loved sports of all kind and was a very competitive baseball player, runner, curler, bowler and golfer. She won several curling bonspiels and trophies over the years and continued golfing until 85. It was always quite joyful to watch a curling final on TV with Lorna quite clearly expressing what the skip should be doing… and wasn’t!

Lorna had a passion for writing, especially poetry. She recited poems at many functions and was often asked to prepare a special poem for  birthdays or anniversaries.  Lorna also had a talent for yodeling along with her many other musical talents!

Those reading this memory of Lorna’s life will know her as a person with a heart of gold and a welcoming smile to everyone she knew. She had boundless energy and was always ready to go out whether for dinner, a drive in the country, off to a dance or even just for a walk.

Lorna was very close to and had a special bond with her Grand-Son Kyle who consulted her for many life decisions. She had that same kind of bond with her Grand-Daughter Haley who would stay with her many summers and went on many adventures. After the passing of Joyce Gray, she became and Grand Mother to Van and Ayla Hamilton who will cherish her memory forever.

Lorna also loved to travel and went on several trips to Europe, in the United States and around Canada. She especially loved RV trips with Deborah and Dave all over the Upper United States. She loved camping and yurting with Grant every summer, going on hiking trails and walking right up to 86 years old.

Her love for family and friends was endless and her desire to be around loved ones helped encourage her to move to Penticton B.C. with Deborah and Dave. This also allowed her to be able to spend some time with her Grand Daughter Haley (and Logan) and Great Granddaughter Rene as much as pandemic allowed.

In true Lorna fashion, she was very gentle and easily adapted to this new chapter in the past nine months of her life. Her passions became (of course) watching curling on TV, puzzles and entertainment at the Elks Lodge on Saturday nights and being with her loved ones. The ability to go for walks on the beach and look at the mountains from her deck also brought her much joy.

Grant and Deborah were blessed to have a mother with such a big heart, willing to do anything that was asked of her. She had a deep love for animals, especially dogs. She recently wrote: “When I die, I hope my soul goes to where my dogs went.”

Lorna’s advice was “Before you speak, let your words pass through three states: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?”

Many thanks to the Penticton fire Department and EMT for all the work they did trying to assist Lorna at her death. Many thanks to neighbor’s that assisted before ambulatory care arrived.

Thank you to all the friends and acquaintances in Penticton and at the Penticton Elks Lodge who made Lorna feel so welcome in her new community. A special thank you to Mike, Shelley and Tammy who always spent quality time with our Mom. All of her friends in Russell were very much missed and she truly felt blessed to have so many dear friends. She thought of all her Russell community constantly, for all who took the challenge of calling her in BC she loved every conversation.
