Neil Robert Jamieson

Obituary
Passed away peacefully on Saturday June 6, 2020, in Penticton, BC at the age of 60 years. Neil is survived by his wife Michelle and son Jackson and many other family and friends. There is so much that can be said about Neil that the family has asked that everyone post their memories or condolences so that they can read them in the coming days.
Penticton Speed Way
Our community lost a very special person, Neil Jamieson was an incredible man on so many levels. A family man, a businessman, and had a strong sense of community. He was a leader and an inspirer. His generosity was overwhelming, but most of the time, you would never even know all of the people he was helping. Neil was involved with the Penticton Vees, the Speedway, Lacrosse, and Penticton Minor Hockey, to name a few. Neil gave back to many local charities, and was a strong supporter and advocate for local breakfast programs. It was his mission to ensure that no kid went hungry. Neil was a huge supporter of the racetrack. Not only was he a corporate sponsor through his business Underwriters Insurance, he also had his own race cars and spent many years behind the wheel. When he wasn’t behind the wheel he was letting other racers drive his cars. He even held a track record for many years for fastest time-in. His legacy will live on in our community through his beautiful family and all the people he has touched.

NJ was one of a kind. He was always looking to help people that needed it the most. He was so loyal to the Vees, The BCHL, Junior 'A' hockey and youth athletics in general. NJ was proud of what we all accomplished together with the Vees. On a personal level, he was so important to me. I leaned on him constantly for support. This is a big loss for our entire community.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and kept Neil in their thoughts over the past couple of years. Because of the COVID-19 restrictions a Celebration of Neils life will be held at a later date.

Rest in peace NJ, after such a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. We celebrated the victories along the way, and felt the pain of each setback. Though he seemed larger than life, he was quiet and unassuming with his philanthropy. He kept finding new ways to give, pretty amazing, so generous. We will miss you! Condolences to Michelle and Jax.

It is difficult to suitably articulate the loss of Neil, however as ‘difficult’ didn’t deter Neil….Neil was a generous and thoughtful man, a man with purpose and principle, a man with pride and passion, a man with love: love for his family, his friends, his community. He was giving in many ways, not the least which was his philanthropy, but importantly his time. All great characteristics that merely begin to describe a man that is greatly missed. Truly, and most noteworthy of Neil, is this sentiment merely adds to an echo. Neil walked the walk.

My Nelson family and the Jamiesons go back some 60 years. Neil and I are the same age and we spent some wonderful time together at his family home on Duncan Avenue in Penticton and at “Camp” on Kootenay Lake. We hadn’t connected recently and I am stunned at this loss. Like his entire family, he was giving, caring and involved, and his kind boyhood friendship was enormously supportive of me at time when that was precisely what I needed. My thoughts are with Don, Ross, Michelle and Jackson.

I was so saddened to hear of Neil’s passing today. The whole Jamieson family were good friends to us growing up. They would visit us at our cottage on Kootenay Lake and we would have loads of fun at their home in Penticton whenever we visited. There was always a cheerfulness about them as a family. Neil gave back, following in the footsteps of Dunc Pennie who contributed so much to their community. We have all been enriched by sharing our lives with them. Love to Michelle, Jackson, Don, Ross their families. I hope the day comes before too long that we can gather together to celebrate Neil’s good life.

Saddened by the news that the cancer won. My cousin faced the battle, head on. So very glad to have had the sporadic conversation’s with him, over the year’s. Truly a flaming spirit. Our Jamieson reunion picture’s are that much more important, now- due to the passing of a few Jamieson cousin’s.
Hopefully, Neil’s involvement with the community,( like his parent’s before him), has inspired many, to carry on the thing’s he was involved with… THAT, would be a great legacy.

Growing up in Penticton, my parents, Viv and Norm Hyssop were friends of Pennie and Dunc, and the kids all knew each other.

It has been said so many times, in various ways, but Neil truly was the unsung hero of youth in Penticton. We had the occasion to work with Neil on many initiatives over the years, and he gave selflessly, no matter the sport, activity or kid. If he saw a young person with potential, or a young person showing initiative. he showed up to help. He was a huge supporter and advocate for minor sport, for lacrosse and for keeping opportunities available for kids in the Community.
Through his actions he inspired us, and our experience was, everyone around him, to make opportunities for youth happen. If there was a will, Neil would help find the way.
He was also a great friend. A sounding board that was real and down to earth. He was a great listener and kept his opinions open to new ideas. We always loved hearing how Jackson inspired Neil to travel and see things from a different perspective.
We’ll miss him. The kids of Penticton will really miss him, and we send the biggest hugs to Jackson and Michelle.
