Obituary

GETTEL, Norman Philip

October 29, 1937 – December 30, 2022

It is with heavy hearts we share that Norm passed away suddenly at his home in Penticton BC  at the age of 85.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Isabelle (Robertson), his son Rodney (Deb), son-in-law Jack, 4 grandchildren, Corbin, Cassity, Cooper and Emerson and many nieces and nephews.

Norm is survived by one brother, Les (Terry) and was predeceased by his daughter Christal, parents John and Birdie, brothers Fred, Stanley, and Gordon, and sister Emma.

Born in Grenfell, Saskatchewan, Norm moved to Edmonton, Alberta shortly after high school.

Originally studying to be a chartered accountant, Norm realized that career wasn’t for him and in 1956 at the age of 19 went to work for the Dominion Rubber Company (Uniroyal)  and was the youngest tire salesman that they had ever had.  His successful career as a sales rep eventually took him to Vancouver, British Columbia where he met Isabelle thru his colleague Warren Swanson, who was married to Isabelle’s older sister Lona.  Marrying in August of 1963, they eventually settled in New Westminster and had 2 children.

Retiring after over 42 years in the tire business, Norm and Isabelle moved to Penticton, BC and have enjoyed over 20 years in the Okanagan.  Norm was an avid golfer who still played 3 times a week at the Penticton Golf Club and proudly achieved Hole In One status not once, but twice in 2019 and 2021.  Norm was a big believer in giving blood, reaching 150 donations by 2019. He also spent his spare time woodworking – nothing made him happier than having someone stop by and pick up a homemade planter or table, and many of his friends and family have a piece of his handiwork.

Norm was a wonderful husband, father, son, uncle and friend who loved his family, enjoyed his life to the fullest and will be missed by all those who knew him.

A celebration of Norm’s life will be held at a later date in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
