Valentine P. Young (Jones)

February 14, 1945 - August 15, 2023

Obituary

It is with great sadness to share that our beloved Valentine (Val) Young, formerly McHale, of Penticton BC, passed away suddenly, yet peacefully on August 15th, 2023 at the age of 78 years. Val was the kindest of souls who was able to make a connection with anyone who crossed her path. Her ability to remember people and their stories was second to none.  Val was an active and caring woman who always chose to see the best in others. She developed life long friendships every place she lived. Val grew up in Hatch End, England and followed her heart to Canada in her late teens to marry her first husband, Gerard McHale.  Val spent time in Northern British Columbia raising her three children before settling in the Okanagan where she called Summerland, then Penticton home for 30 years. Val used her culinary training she obtained while studying in Switzerland and taught Food Safe throughout the Okanagan for many years. Her passions were first and foremost her children and grandchildren, gardening, cooking, sewing, helping others and her relationship with Jesus Christ. Val took part in a number of different volunteer opportunities put on by different churches in the Okanagan which her and her husband, Gary, were involved in. Val enjoyed the outdoors and spent time walking/hiking with friends and family, and swimming in Okanagan Lake during the summer. From a young age Val enjoyed dancing which had her teaching ballet over the years – she also enjoyed attending the various senior dances held around Penticton with her husband, Gary.

Val is survived by her second husband, Gary Young, his son Bill(Pamela) and his grandchildren: Robert and Isaiah; her McHale sister in-laws Anna and Maria(Kim); her son Sean(Karin); her daughters Erin(Jeremy) and Marianne(Todd); her grandchildren: Elizabeth, Quinn, Ben, and Thomas – who were the joy in her life. Val was predeceased by her mother, Noreen; Auntie Doff and Auntie Penn; her first husband Gerard; son in-law Jeremy McGoran.

Thank you to the compassionate team at Penticton General Hospital Emergency Room for all of their support and assistance during this time. As per Val’s wishes, she is to be cremated and ashes placed at Canyon View Cemetery, Summerland.  Service details may follow. Private family celebration of life will take place at a later date.

From: Anna McHale
Relation: Sister-in-law

Val was a very big part of my life since I was a very small child, I have always considered her my sister.
She was always there for me through many different situations and I valued her advise.
She had such a large circle of friends and was there for them too.
Watching her as a young mum with her children and then as a dotting grandmother with her grandchildren was so special and is my most lasting memory.
She would say that the lifetime of joy that her family gave her is irreplaceable. Really it is the other way around, what she gave everyone who knew her is what’s irreplaceable.
Her happiness was her family and friends and her deep faith.
She would want us to think of her in a better place while we try to come to terms with our grief.
I can honestly say that I will never be able to think of her without a smile, I loved her so much and will miss her beyond words💔

Val was the embodiment of kindness and generosity to everyone she met. She will be sorely missed by the many lives she touched, including mine.
My heartfelt sympathies go out to everyone in her family.

From: Lyn Town

I was so sorry to hear of Valentine’s passing. She was a very genuine and caring lady. We met her first at the Information Centre, then food Safe and at church. She had a lovely laugh, very expressive eyes, and a gentle touch. Condolences to Gary and family and the McHale Family

From: Jeanette Tupper
Relation: Former Neighbour

Val lived on Burnette Street in Maple Ridge BC during the 1970’s, which was the adjoining street to us . She was an excellent mother and a very sweet, caring person. Apparently we were born and raised in neighbouring areas in North London UK (she in Hatch End and myself in Wembley Park). I did not know her then but I was certainly glad to know her when she lived in Maple Ridge BC.
