Obituary

Vittorio Scialdone, Vic, Opa- changed the world around him. Especially the lives of those who loved him the most! Born in Vitulazio, Italy Vittorio grew up as the baby boy of the family with his mom and dad and his 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Vic met the love of his life Rose, in Switzerland where he was working as a painter and she as a waitress, from Germany.

Dragging Rose (aka Oma) and their 2 babies across the world from Europe with only suitcases in their hands, the young family began their lives in Edmonton, Alberta where they were surprised with another baby! With all those mouths to feed, Vic started his very own painting company within weeks. He worked hard in the day and danced all through the night with Oma at the German club, playing the trumpet with his pals. He was a shark on the pool table, and put up a good fight in darts, bocce, bowling, and foosball! After spending some time in the frigid winters though, Vic knew he needed to get his tan back on. He sought out a beautiful piece of land in Italy-like Naramata where they would then build their forever home. Little did they know that that home would turn into an oasis for friends and family around the world as well.

Driving for hours to get a scratchy moustache kiss or a good game of dice in were just some highlights of visits. From Opa’s homemade over-the-alcohol-limit wine, delicious fruit, pizza, and pasta, to his charming personality (when you weren’t dating one of his daughters), you always left Opa and Oma’s with a full belly and the happiest of memories.

Vic was a proud leader and member of the Legion, becoming the 40th president who was needed to turn that club around. Every person who knows Opa, knows his heart is pure gold. He’s the most generous and caring person, never asking for anything in return. Donating his time, money, and sometimes personal belongings (even a property or two) to people in need is something we don’t see too often anymore.

We will miss our cuddly teddy bear dearly. But we know how blessed we are to be part of his life, and it is an amazing life at that. We love you Opa, forever and always.

Vic is survived by his wife, 3 children, 5 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and dear friends and family.

Relation: Grandfather/Grandson

Our grandfather was an amazing man, and brought laughter to his family, and his friends. He was a big part of the reason that everyone traveled for hours, and flocked to his home for a glass of wine, a slice (or six) or pizza, and knowingly accepted the inevitable hangover in the morning.

Love you, Opa! You will be missed, but never forgotten.

From: Sharon McCaughan
Relation: Vic's Daughter's Friend

My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Scialdone and her wonderful four-generational family. Mandi and I always meant to make that road trip out there—it sounds like it would have been an amazing time… minus the hangover part, of course! Sending hugs to all.

From: Maria Nicole Scialdone
Relation: Zio/nipote

I am so sad to hear about the passing of Vic. I’ve known him and Rose since my family moved to the neighborhood in 1989. He grew to be friend of the family and could always be counted on for a bright and cheery smile and vigorous wage hello when he’d drive by. The neighborhood will not be the same without him. Sending so much love to Rose, Cookies, and all of his family and friends

From: Lindsay Peterson
Relation: Neighbor for 35 years.

I grew up know Vic (and Rose). When I was little they would always open their hill (driveway/side yard), up to us kid for sledding in the winter, we would spend hours just having a blast, and just general shenanigans in the summer. Vic and my dad were friends, dad always recommended Vic to his clients and vise versa. He will be greatly missed, and my heart breaks for Rose and their whole family. The neighborhood won’t be the same. ❤️
