Ward Naismith Mowry

June 18, 1941 - November 2, 2022

Obituary

Ward was born in Portland, Oregon to Frank and Marjorie Mowry. After attending elementary and secondary school, Ward was proud to graduate from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. His college years had a huge impact on his life, and he graduated as a history major. He was the first in his family to attend college.

On August 5th, 1972 he was married to Jeannette Makarenko. Soon after they moved to Estevan, Saskatchewan, where Ward spent most of his adult life. They were divorced in 1985.

He was employed by Estevan Comprehensive School, working primarily as an English teacher. Ward was an active member at Woodlawn Golf Club, and the Estevan Badminton Club. He played in the local slowpitch league with the staff team, and was a skilled pitcher. He was the badminton coach at the school for many years, helping many players to win Regional titles and compete at the Provincial Championships. Ward was also commissioner for the 1997 SHSAA Provincial Badminton Championships. He taught there until his retirement, and stayed there for a few more years working as a substitute teacher.

Ward surprised everyone by moving to Osoyoos, BC in 2009 with his two cats in tow. Here he lived a great life, reading (one of the great loves of his life) and golfing
(also one of the great loves of his life). More than that, Ward spoke fondly of the friends and golfing buddies that he shared life with in Osoyoos.

He also had a huge circle of friends outside of Osoyoos that he kept in touch with. It was a regular occurrence to get a Happy Birthday email from Ward, and sometimes it was even followed with a surprise gift from Rogers Chocolates in the mail. He was incredibly generous and thoughtful with his friends. He could expound on a number of topics, with insight and wit. He will truly be missed.

Ward is survived by his sister Eleanor Jane (Robinson), and predeceased by his parents Frank and Marjorie. Tributes in memory of Ward can be made to Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, USA or the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club, Junior Golf Program.
